Swamiji: By the word 'heart' in the tenet 'follow the heart' is meant 'that spiritual immaculate center' in your inner personality, known to voice its sublime notes, rid of preference and prejudice, revealing a pure insight. Such an unsullied source is there within you. Mind is sentimental, susceptible to various influences.
Here now you report a contrast: 'heart choosing escapist ways', and the mind resisting it. Are you right in assigning the heart's position to the mind? If 'yes', then listen to the mind and disregard the heart. That will only mean interchanging the two words. The effect will still be the same.
What is important is to listen to the good, benevolent and right, not to what is likely to be the opposite. Call it by any name - Conscience, inner voice or the heart.
As are the sudden responses from the superficial level, so too the deeper and sober ones, will be there in every one. Develop greater attunement to the deeper note. That will be easiest and safest.
