01 Shanti Mantras | Self-addressed Prayers | Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

1892 Views | 3 years ago

This five-day discourse series was delivered by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha in Jamshedpur. Through this rare exposition, the listener is able to have a glimpse of our great Upanishadic heritage.

These Shanti mantras, totally ten in number, are chanted before any Upanishadic session. The chanting of the Mantra, understanding the profound meaning of the words, calms the mind and also makes the environment peaceful. It prepares the mind to absorb and assimilate the message of the Upanishads.

Swamiji says, “Although we are apparently praying to certain natural powers, to OM or to Brahman, what we are actually praying for is a transformation of our being and our personality. So, they are self-addressed prayers. Their efficacy depends exclusively on our emotional and wholesome association with the prayer.”

Swamiji begins the discussion of the Shanti Mantra, Om Shanno mitrah sham varunah....., taking our minds to unimaginable depths.
