Swamiji begins the talk with the reiteration that when a person understands that he is the universal transcendental Self, he no longer identifies himself with the Guna functions.

Discussing 14.20, Swamiji says that the soul is transcendental in nature but our identification with the body, mind, intelligence and ego makes us suffer the illusion of birth and death. When one understands that he is ever- free and nature with its three Gunas are playing in his personality, he becomes immortal.

Swamiji discusses the practical question posed by Arjuna, similar to the one in chapter 2. Arjuna asks about the characteristics of a person who has gone beyond the Gunas, how he acts and how he goes beyond the Gunas?

Swamiji discusses the reply of Sri Krishna which is a practical guide for all seekers. Krishna says that an enlightened man neither resents the rise of illumination or brilliance (which is born of Sattva), nor activity (which is born of Rajas), nor even delusion (which is born of Tamas), when these are abundantly present. He does not long for them when they are in a much lower proportion. He remains neutral to the modes of nature and is not disturbed by them. Knowing it is only the Guṇas that act, he stays established in the self, without wavering.
