11 – Yoga of Enlightened Action | Bhagavad Gita Chapter 3 | Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

4 Views | 2 years ago

In this discourse, Swamiji continues to analyze Arjuna’s ever-relevant question. What is that force that impels man to do sinful deeds, even unwillingly?

Sri Krishna says that it is desire alone which corrupts the minds of people which subsequently gets transformed into greed and anger. Desire shrouds the discrimination power of the intellect and veils our Self knowledge just as fire is covered by smoke, a mirror gets obscured by dust and an embryo gets concealed in the womb.

The seats of all desires are the senses, mind and the intellect. In order to overcome desires, a seeker has to regulate the senses which are superior to the gross body. The mind is superior to the senses and the intellect is superior to the mind. Beyond all these faculties is the infinite soul which is supreme. Thus, being Self seated, a seeker must subdue all the lower tendencies and attain poise and purity of mind.

Referring to Kathopanishad, Swamiji explains this beautifully with an example of a chariot pulled by five horses.
